Veranes Shows Her Class At The Gold Coast

Expensive filly Veranes has shown why she was originally considered a stakes horse when she finally broke her maiden status at the .

Veranes ($2.70) was slow to jump and a clear last early but charged home an easy win at her 10th race start in Wednesday’s 1200m-maiden.

A $320,000 buy at the 2017 Yearling Sales, Veranes was highly rated as a two-year-old by trainer and owners David Devine and Neville Morgan.

She was aimed at the Magic Millions 2Y0 Classic and other top juvenile races having her first four starts in stakes races without success.

Veranes then had a stint in Waller’s Sydney stable with two placings at the NSW provincials before being sent back north.

Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer said Veranes had been pleasing the stable in recent weeks.

“She was good in a trial and then a jump-out so despite having the outside barrier we were confident. I think she can win a few better races now,” Shailer said.

Waller continued his domination of Queensland distance races when lightly framed filly Miss Fialka ($3.30) came from last to record a strong win in the Girls On Tour Handicap (2200m).

The filly is by champion sire out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Purple Muse and a metropolitan win adds considerable value to her as a future broodmare.

Shailer said Miss Fialka was a limited filly but might go on to better things.

“It was a to go from 1350metres to winning at 2200 at her second run from a spell,” he said.

Troubled galloper Pork And Beans continued his successful when he made it three wins from four starts in Jewel Raceday Handicap (1100m).

Trainer has nursed Pork And Beans back to the track after the gelding injured a leg following a win in a maiden in November 2017.

“He had 14 months off and he is a day-to-day proposition but he has plenty of ability, “Baldwin said.
