The first race at Sandown on Wednesday was only a maiden, but it turned out to be a day to remember for both trainer and jockey of the winning galloper.

A $1,250 online sale purchase, Dream Inherit provided Ballarat trainer Yoshitomo Shima his first city win when taking out the maiden event at her second career start.

The Kuroshio filly was ridden by apprentice jockey Tatum Bull, who herself notched up her first metropolitan win with the victory.

Shima first came to Australia to attend a riding school on the Gold Coast where he fell in love with racing. He worked for Flemington trainer Steve Richards for a decade and showed his determination to succeed in the sport by winning the Victorian Thoroughbred Employee of the Year in 2009.

He then furthered his racing education by joining the Chris Waller stable in Sydney, before taking out a trainer's license and setting up his own stable in Ballarat.

The narrow victory didn't come without some tense moments for the trainer, though.

“It was very, very close, so I'm still shaking,” Shima told Racing.com after the race.

“Tatum rode perfect.”

Shima noted that he saw a video of the filly after the owner had purchased her online and was impressed by what he saw.

“I was so glad he was sending this horse to me.”

Bull was all smiles after dismounting from what was her only ride for the day.

“It's absolutely super,” she said.

“It's my first city winner as well and to do it for Yoshi is quite rewarding.

“It's a massive thrill to get a win for him.”
