Promising Tarwin Wins Again At Caulfield

Promising three-year-old Tarwin has continued a rise through the grades with victory in the $300,000 VOBIS 3YO Sires at .

The gelding was sent out the $2.20 favourite in Saturday’s 1600m race off the back of a convincing win at the same track two weeks earlier.

With aboard, the -trained Tarwin was last early and then had to circle the field approaching the home turn before hitting the front at the 100m.

Taking his record to three wins and a second from four starts, Tarwin defeated Wham ($16) by three-quarters of a length with another half-length to Duke Of Magnus ($26) third.

“He’s very exciting,” Mertens, who has ridden the gelding in three of his four starts, said.

“I’ve had a little bit to do with the horse and he keeps stepping up to the plate like we hoped.

“I think he will continue to go further.

“I rode him in his first start at Sale (last September) and we went into that race with confidence that he would go well and he put them away quite nicely that day.

“From then on we always knew he would improve again from a little break and that is what he has done.”

“He has a bit of a look around once he gets to the front. He’s got a lot of raw ability and will keep on improving with the more racing he does.”

Tarwin, by 2010 winner Americain out of the mare Clandon, is a home bred for Philip Wooldridge and his family.

“We bred and raced the mother as well and the grandmother and the great granddam, so it goes right back 35 years now,” Wooldridge said.
