The Cheltenham Festival begins in seven weeks and it is the biggest and best betting meeting of the year. By contrast, the jumps racing in the UK at Leicester and today is ordinary, but there are some bets. The nap of the day is , which is paying -120 to win the Thrill of Ownership Novices' at 16:00 at Exeter.

It is unlikely that any horses running over jumps in Britain this will appear at the Festival. The going at both tracks is projected to be heavy, so horses proven on the ground deserve special attention. Newcastle stages a twilight meeting on the all-weather and the going is the usual Standard. The best bet on the card is in the novices' stakes at 17:45.

Cheltenham could become a five-day meeting with six races on each card. Some racing professionals suggest an extra day would dilute the quality. In fact, there is a precedent in the form of , which races from Tuesday to Saturday in June. A Saturday fixture at Cheltenham would generate a new audience of racing fans who do not believe a day at the Festival justifies taking a day off work during the week.

The Friday feature should still be the , for which the 2019 winner Al Boum Photo is the favourite at +450. The last horse to win the race back-to-back was Best Mate in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Al Boum Photo produced a career-best Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 178 in the Gold Cup and ran to a mark of 175 in his last race on New Year's Day. The horse is proven over the course and distance and looks an each-way bet to nothing in the sport's most prestigious chase.

Prime Venture's best RPR is 143, so it could be lapped in the Gold Cup. However, novices have room for improvement and this could be a progressive horse. The Evan Williams runner has yet to win over fences but was fourth in the Welsh National. The horse fell at on Saturday when going well. He can gain some compensation for that mishap and produce a clear-cut win. However, the horse is nowhere near Gold Cup class and won't be introduced into antepost betting.

Majestic Sands is the odds-on favourite to win the race for inexperienced horses at Newcastle. It is a Class 5 race over five furlongs and connections of the winning horse receive just £3,429. There are only five overnight declarations, so each-way bets are settled at one-quarter the odds for two places. Majestic Sands has obvious claims in this drop in level, so the other runners are competing for second place and the one remaining spot in the frame. The double on Majestic Sands and Prime Venture can be backed at just over +200 with online bookmakers.
