One of Queensland‘s most famous sets of racing colours could make another appearance in the Group One Queensland Derby after Crafty Spirit‘s win at Eagle Farm.
Crafty Spirit ($10) made it two wins on end when he won the Sporting Chance Foundation Quality.
The gelding races in the same colours as the champion Queensland stayer Strawberry Road who won the 1983 AJC Derby, Queensland Derby and Cox Plate.
Crafty Spirit is trained by Dan Bougoure who is the son of the late Doug Bougoure who trained Strawberry Road.
“I have always had a wrap on this horse. I know he is by a sprinting sire in Spirit Of Boom but he throws to his dam who is by a Derby winner in Arena,” Bougoure said.
“I will throw in a nomination for the Queensland Derby and see how he comes up.”
“We now know he can handle wet and dry tracks. I have been wanting all along to get him out to 1600m-2000m and 2400m of the Derby is the next step.”
Dan Bougoure rarely has a big team but he knows what it takes to win a Group One race having been Strawberry Road’s strapper and also trainer of the super sprinter Falvelon.
