Bjorn Baker’s Magic Millions carnival stocks soared in the space of one race at Randwick when he produced three of the first four horses across the line, including the winner Edison.
Edison posted his second successive victory in Saturday’s Bisley Workwear Handicap (1400m) when he comfortably defeated Godolphin’s Hilo by 1-1/2 lengths.
The winner’s stablemate Irithea ran her best race this campaign for third with Baker’s other runner, Redouble, fourth.
The Warwick Farm trainer confirmed all three would head to Queensland for the Magic Millions race day at the Gold Coast on January 16 with Edison leading the charge.
“He’s off to the Magic Millions, as is Irithea. I thought her run was outstanding, and Redouble as well,” Baker said.
“They’re all Magic Millions horses, that’s the main aim. This was another stepping stone.
“Irithea and Redouble we probably won’t run again (before the Magic Millions) and Edison, I’ll just have a good think about.”
Baker has long had a good opinion of Edison and tested him in stakes company as a three-year-old but it is as an older horse that he has started to shine.
The Randwick win took his record to six victories from 16 starts, the majority of them this year.
“He is really dominant now. At his last six starts he has won four of them and he’s kept going up and up and up,” Baker said.
Edison’s performance was a bright spot on what had been a tough day for Baker after one of his earlier runners, Bring The Ransom, failed to finish.
“Thankfully she is OK and she will be back but it just shows you, you’ve got to take the good with the bad,” he said.
Tim Clark rode a positive race on Edison, settling him on the speed and making the most of the four-year-old’s light weight to quickly put a gap on his rivals in the straight.
Clark has no doubt the horse can be competitive at the Gold Coast and possibly in even bigger targets down the track.
“He’s always shown really good ability from early on and he’s getting better as he gets a little bit older,” Clark said.
“They’re going to have a lot of fun with him.”
