In-form trainer Tony McEvoy has been in Brisbane this week putting the final touches to his winter Group One tilt, starting with Dollar For Dollar.
McEvoy won his sixth Group One for the season when Despatch took out the Goodwood in Adelaide last week.
A win on Saturday would put him in equal second place on the Australian trainers’ list for Group Ones behind Chris Waller on 17.
McEvoy has increased his presence in Queensland since Sunlight won the 2018 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
He will try to add to that tally with Dollar For Dollar in the Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm.
McEvoy then hopes Dollar For Dollar will join his Group One winners Despatch and Manuel in the Stradbroke Handicap on June 8.
Dollar For Dollar showed he was up up Group One company with a close third in the Doomben 10,000.
“Jamie Kah rode him and said the barrier (12) beat him. It is the worry on Saturday as he is drawn off the track again,” McEvoy said.
“The problem is his racing style is to get up there. Although a few people say horses can win from any barrier on the new track.”
Dollar For Dollar has won eight of his 24 starts and McEvoy hasn’t been afraid to take on elite company.
“He ran second in the Group One Rupert Clarke Stakes in the spring at 1400m so the Stradbroke is going to suit him,” McEvoy said.
McEvoy resisted the temptation to run Manuel on Saturday and instead will trial the Group One winner at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.
He said he was still at a loss to explain why Manuel, who who the Group One CF Orr Stakes in the autumn, ran last in the Doomben 10,000.
“Mark Du Plessis rode him and after they had gone 400m he said he had no horse,” McEvoy said.
McEvoy is also keen to trial Despatch at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.
“He has been to Queensland before but hasn’t run in Brisbane since the Phelan Ready Stakes in 2016 when he ran third,” McEvoy said.
“He is a different horse now but I am still keen for him to have another try at the Queensland way of going.”
