Trainer Anthony Cummings will no doubt be hopeful La Cabana’s surprise win at Randwick on Wednesday will set the trend of longshot victories for the stable this week.
La Cabana settled prominent on a slow tempo in the opening event at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday and did enough to hold off a fast closing Tycoon Hallie.
At +2500, she was part of a tough start for punters at Randwick with Coastwatch winning the second event for Chris Waller at a double figure quote.
The win represented a sharp turnaround in form for the Swiss Ace filly who the start prior was beaten more than five lengths at Newcastle.
“I am really pleased to see that today,” Cummings said.
“Her last run probably didn’t really suggest this but some of her early work did. I changed a few things in her training routine and she did well.
“It was easily the best she’d presented at the races on any day and it was quite likely she was going to run her best race.
“Her first run she hit the line really well and did show us a bit of promise. We thought we had something that would win something worthwhile in town at that point.
“A couple of things went wrong on the way, she didn’t like heavy tracks at all. There was a question mark here today on how she would handle the heavy track. Obviously she handled it very well.”
With no stable runners at Newcastle on Thursday, the Anthony Cummings-team will be next represented at Rosehill on Saturday.
Like La Cabana, his three runners at Rosehill will all be considered rank outsiders including Kobestar who contests the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
“His work has been really good,” Cummings said.
“His work has been up to that standard all this preparation. I know his race form doesn’t warrant the acceptance but the first time he has actually gotten his act together was last start.”
That last start was a slender victory at Kembla Grange over 1600m on March 12.
“It was a fairly exotic ride from Tommy (Berry),” Cummings said.
“He sort of put the pedal to the metal a long way from home and held on. There was a lot of merit in that, it was a really good effort from the horse.
“He has done well since and worked times that a lot of the other Guineas horses couldn’t of on Tuesday. I think he’s earned his place off of that and we’ll give it a go.”
Kobestar is currently quoted at +15000 for the Rosehill Guineas.
Other Anthony Cummings stable runners at Rosehill on Saturday include Prince Fawaz (Ranvet Stakes, +12500) and Fill Of Fun (+12500) who is third emergency in the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m).
