Ciaron Maher is poised to make another splash at Randwick this Saturday as Jimmysstar, one of the stable’s rising stars, returns from a brief spell.
While triumph in the Benchmark 100 over 1400 metres may not rival the breathtaking victory of Pride Of Jenni in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, it remains a pivotal race for the promising Jimmysstar.
The ultimate aim for the former New Zealander this campaign is the prestigious Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane come June. However, to secure a spot in that illustrious event, Jimmysstar must elevate his current rating of 93.
Maher conveyed his optimism on Monday, foreseeing Jimmysstar as a formidable contender and thereby unlocking the pathway to the Stradbroke. “He’s freshened up really well,” remarked Maher. “He looks fantastic and I think he’s in a good spot.”
“This is just a ratings race, and if he performs admirably, he’ll have another opportunity at stakes level in Brisbane,” Maher explained, outlining the progression plan for Jimmysstar.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Maher emphasised the potential route to the Stradbroke, noting a Group 3 race in Brisbane that could facilitate Jimmysstar’s entry into the coveted field.
Jimmysstar swiftly endeared himself to punters with victories in his initial three outings in Australia. Despite a setback in the Listed Elms Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in February and an unfortunate showing in the Group 3 Newcastle Stakes (1400m) in March, his popularity remains unwavering.
With anticipation building around Jimmysstar’s return, Maher and his team are optimistic about the journey ahead for this promising campaigner.
