Trainer Jerome Hunter has given the green light for his 84-rated mare, Rich Fortune, to take on some of Australia's top sprinters in the upcoming Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) this Saturday.
Despite Rich Fortune not securing a victory since her triumph in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1100m) a year ago, the prospect of a small field has convinced Hunter to test her mettle against formidable competitors like Imperatriz, Bella Nipotina, and Private Eye.
In an interview with Racing.com, Hunter justified the decision, stating, “You can't win the raffle without a ticket.” He emphasized the mare's fitness and pointed out the potential advantage in a field that may not consist entirely of 1000-meter specialists, suggesting that some competitors might be looking for a bit more distance.
Hunter added, “If there is lots of speed on, it would definitely suit my horse.”
Reflecting on jockey Craig Williams' insights from a previous race, Hunter shared, “Craig Williams said when he rode her in the Kensington Stakes she was very keen and he said, ‘You really need a very fast run race for her to settle and run on.' I guess you couldn't pick any faster race than the Lightning.”
Acknowledging the potential underdog status, Hunter expressed optimism, saying, “We'll be the rank outsider no doubt. Hopefully, they are having a bad day, and we are having a good day.”
This bold move by the trainer sets the stage for an intriguing showdown as Rich Fortune aims to defy expectations and make her mark in the competitive arena of sprint racing.
