Good Idea has carried a set of one of Australia’s most recognisable colours to victory in the Group 2 TAB Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on Monday.

The Phillip Stokes-trained stayer wore the colours of Dato Tan Chin Nam who owned Bart Cummings-trained Melbourne Cup winners Think Big, Saintly and Viewed along with dual Cox Plate winner So You Think, the sire of Good Idea.

It is through Think Big Stud the colours race on. It shares in the ownership of Good Idea with Dr Alan Jackson and his wife Colleen who raced the stayer’s dam Faint Perfume, and bred the winner, with Dato Tan Chin Nam.

A Cup plan was hatched after Good Idea after running second behind King Of Leogrance last year

Under the guidance of Ben Thompson, Good Idea (+1600) scored by three and a half lengths from Eperdument (+8000) with Long Arm (+550) in third place.

“I rode this horse in this race last year and ran second to King Of Leogrance and he went super,” Thompson said.

“As soon as I got off him that day, Phillip said ‘we’ll come back next year and go one better’.”

Thompson moved to Brisbane in the middle of last year, but was keeping tabs on Good Idea from the time he returned to work.

And Thompson made sure he did not get over confident during Monday’s race.

“I was confident last year, but Damian Lane cruised past me, but I had a look over at the screen 80 (metres) out today and thought, ‘nah he’s home’,” Thompson said.

“There’s nothing better than riding on a big day, in front of a crowd, and riding a winner.”

Stokes was in Adelaide inspecting yearlings on Sunday, but the lack of flights from the city forced him to return to Victoria on race day morning.

Good Idea was saddled by Stokes’ son Tom, who runs the Adelaide stable.

“The team at Pakenham have done a great job,” Stokes said.

“Dad was very confident, I was hesitant. It’s a massive honour. I can remember growing up and watching those colours going around.

“I’m sure the owners will be very proud.”
