VICTORIA DERBY JOCKEYS’ COMMENTS
John Allen (Extra Brut) 1st : “It’s unbelievable, really. I’ve come a long way in a couple of years and that’s all due to Darren Weir and his team. He rounded them up in a matter of strides. I thought I got to the front way too soon but all credit to him, he toughed it out.”
Ben Melham (Stars Of Carrum) 2nd : “He had his chance … it was a good tough effort.”
James McDonald (Chapada) 3rd : “He’s a star in the making. He’s just not there yet. He’s got any amount of ability and he should have won today.”
Luke Nolen (Sikorsky) 4th : “He’s still sort of learning on the job. He was presented with it but he just didn’t know how to put his foot on the throat of the race. Hopefully he takes a lot away from this campaign.”
Hugh Bowman (Home Ground) 5th : “He ran his heart out, he just wasn’t quite up to the class.”
Tye Angland (Aramayo) 6th : “(It was) disappointing. The first corner cost us … the inside horse (Grinzinger Star) stepped out and didn’t take the corner well and (Savvy Oak) kicked up and l got caught three wide.”
Mark Zahra (Savvy Oak) 7th : “He ran well. He did get held up, I would have preferred clear running but he’ll be a nice horse in the autumn.”
Damian Lane (Visao) 8th : “I thought he ran well under the circumstances. I just got stuck a couple of times between the 500 (metres) and the 300 (metres) but he found the line well.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Farooq) 9th : “Probably just didn’t stay the trip.”
Regan Bayliss (Mickey Blue Eyes) 10th : “He had a bit of a chequered passage, could never really flow into the race.”
Damien Oliver (Grinzinger Star) 11th : “I thought he ran OK. It’s his first preparation. To get all the way to a Derby, I think he’s done a good job.”
Tim Clark (Thinkin’ Big) 12th : “I thought he got into a nice spot but he never travelled as comfortably today. Maybe he’s come to the end of his preparation.”
Dean Yendall (Savoie) 13th : “(I was) happy early, we probably didn’t back up after last week.”
Michael Dee (Tolemac) 14th : “We had to do a bit more work, so it was not ideal.”
Cory Parish (Seberate) 15th : “Pretty good considering I had to do the majority of the (work in front).”
Dwayne Dunn (Louie The Legend) 16th : “He just doesn’t stay beyond 1800 (metres).”
