Queensland-based jockey Mark Du Plessis is confident that Logomania can surprise at big odds in Saturday's 3YO Handicap (1350m) at Doomben.
The Bryan Dais-trained gelding has only had five starts after having almost 12 months off the scene between his first and second career starts.
The son of Eurozone kicked off his career more than 12 months ago in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes at Eagle Farm, where he was beaten 12.5 lengths by Alpine Edge.
Having returned as a gelding in December 2021, Logomania caught the eye when third at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m, before breaking his maiden status in fine style 12 days later at Ipswich.
Du Plessis has partnered the horse in all five career starts and insists he will only get better with age.
“He's a really nice progressive three-year-old,” the jockey told HorseBetting.
“I really think that his next prep is going to be his best.
“Down at the Gold Coast, he didn't handle that track – it was just too wet and horrible for him, and even at Doomben, he didn't really like that stickier track.”
After winning his maiden over 1100m on December 29, Logomania was thrown into the deep end in a Class 4 at the Gold Coast over the Magic Millions Carnival, where he far from disgraced himself when seventh behind The Ritz and Palladas.
On January 22 at his most recent start, Logomania settled in the box seat over 1200m at Doomben on a Soft 7 but was unable to reel in the leaders – Alf's Magic and Pentito – and was forced to settle for third, just 2.25 lengths away.
Now back on to a drier surface (Soft 5) and out to 1350m, the horse's jockey believes they can figure in the finish once again.
Logomania will meet Pentito 0.5kg better at the weights and has drawn inside the Jason Edwards-trained gelding, so Du Plessis is hoping he can get a cart across from that galloper and turn the tables on him over the extra distance.
“He goes to the 1350m – he's drawn awkward – but there's no real standout for mine in that race as far as betting goes,” he said.
“It's (Pentito) not drawn far away from me, so hopefully I can get on its back.
“My bloke's much better with a bit of cover, so hopefully it pants out that way so that I can get behind Pentito or close to it.
“It should give me a good drag into the race.”
In what remains a wide-open affair, Logomania is currently a +2500 chance to take out the fourth race of the day.
Du Plessis will also partner Tony & Maddysen Sears' mare Takeittothelimit in the earlier staying event (Race 2), before looking to cause a boilover in the final race of the day with +7000 chance Pleased for Stephen Lee.
