Dimaggio‘s connections are anticipating a promising spring for their gelding after his resilient victory at Hastings, New Zealand on Saturday.
Under the skilled guidance of jockey Kozzi Asano, the son of Almanzor took an early lead and engaged in a spirited battle with the local contender, Gohugo, on the outside.
In the closing stages of the race, Dimaggio showcased his determination, pulling ahead to secure the win by a long neck. Infer trailed in third place by three-quarters of a length.
Trainer Tony Pike commented on the unexpected race strategy, stating, “It wasn’t our pre-race plan to lead, but he jumped well, and surprisingly, there wasn’t much tempo in this race.
“It was a great ride by Kozzi, who made the most of it with some favourable sectionals. While he’s still a bit green off the bridle, he has returned as a stronger horse, and we hope to see him progress through the ranks.”
Jockey Kozzi Asano shared his satisfaction with the victory, noting, “That horse just outside of me (Gohugo) was a bit keen down the back straight, but my horse was relaxed, and I knew he had more to offer when turning for home.
“He really enjoys this track, and it was a fantastic win today.”
Pike has consistently held high regard for Dimaggio and is eagerly anticipating the Hawke’s Spring Carnival with his talented gelding.
“He’s always shown us a lot of potential,” Pike added.
“He even competed in the Derby last season. He’s a horse who’s still learning the ropes. He’s promising and on the rise. After this win, he’ll likely stay in this grade, so we’ll probably aim to return here in three weeks.”
