Following veterinary advice, Athabascan has been withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup due to an increased risk of a cardiac event.

Athabascan has been sensationally scratched on the eve of the Melbourne Cup, following a vet inspection ahead of the running of the November 5 Flemington feature.
Vets discovered a heart rhythm issue in the $51 shot with the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained horse subsequently scratched from the $8.56million Melbourne Cup.
The latest Melbourne Cup scratching follows top hope, boom international Jan Brueghel, being scratched on vets advice, while Cox Plate winner Via Sistina opted out.
The Athabscan scratching had little impact on Melbourne Cup betting markets, with Vauban ($7) and Buckaroo ($7.50) heading the market.
During the inspection process Racing Victoria veterinarians revealed an unusual heartbeat anomaly.
The ECG reports and blood test findings were shared with three internal medicine specialists who specialise in cardiology.
All three specialists suggested that Athabascan should undergo further extensive testing before being permitted to race again on the grounds of safety.
RV veterinarians took into account details provided by the stable and advised that it would be best for the horse to withdraw from participating in the Melbourne Cup due to a higher likelihood of experiencing a heart-related incident during the race.
All of the 23 other horses have been inspected and are fit to race in the 2024 Melbourne Cup.
