Moroney said he went into Saturday's race confident Saturday's 1400m would be ideal after the colt had no luck when fifth at over 1200m on September 27.

“We really thought he was going to be good enough to go to and have a go at the Group One two-year-old races, but we had to stop and do an operation on him on a hock,” Moroney said.

“For that reason it took a while before we could get him back and then he got a temperature.

“Things were going wrong with him and we had to rush him and then he didn't quite get the right draws in races, but we always thought he was group class.”

Moroney said Alabama Express would head to the (1600m) at on November 2 and the a fortnight later.

“I think he'll see out the 1600 metres,” Moroney said.

“He's a really nice colt, a gorgeous type of horse.”
