The Championships 2016

The Championships 2016
THE biggest week in New South Wales racing has finally arrived.

The Championships at Randwick are run over two consecutive Saturdays on April 2nd and 9th. On the card this week is the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap, Group 1 Australian Derby and the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes.

With only four days left to bet on the big card, punters are getting in now for the best fixed odds prices. CrownBet.com.au has all the available markets to bet on and it is offering a good price for Australia's best thoroughbred.

CrownBet is gifting punters $2.10 for Winx to win the 2016 Doncaster Handicap, which is much better than competing bookmakers are offering. This price won't last long and we think the $2.10 is great value for the 2015 winner.

CupsBetting has taken a look at the markets for the three big races this Saturday and we start with Handicap, featuring Winx and fellow -trained Kermadec.

2016 Doncaster Mile betting market and tips

Some of Australasia's best thoroughbreds have won the Doncaster Handicap.

Wakeful, Cuddle, Emancipation, Super Impose, Sunline, More Joyous are all winners of the 1600m feature and this year one special horse is looking to add its name alongside the champions of the turf.

“I've got a lot of respect for Sunline, More Joyous and Super Impose,” trainer Chris Waller said.

“They've carried those big weights [to win Doncasters], particularly the two mares.

“It's a hard race for mares to win and only the great ones can do it with a big weight.

“They've done it, Winx can do it.”

The Chris Waller-trained Winx will cement its champion status if it can win this Saturday and bookmakers aren't willing to risk it at a big price. The five-year-old mare is $2.10 with CrownBet, which is better than the $2 being offered elsewhere.

The $3 million feature has attracted a good field with many top hopes looking to avoid clashing with Winx. That has taken away from the Doncaster Handicap a touch, but it still remains a top betting race for punters.

2016 Doncaster Handicap final field:

1. Kermadec – $7
2. Turn Me Loose – $26
3. Winx – $2.10
4. Stratum Star – $26
5. Bow Creek – $13
6. – $10
7. Volkstok'n'barrell – $21
8. Good Project – $21
9. Ecuador – $51
10. – $9
11. Azkadellia – $13
12. He Or She – $17
13. Rudy – $81
14. Aomen – $101
15. Vergara – $51

$2 is a short price for a Doncaster favourite, but Winx isn't your normal thoroughbred. It's a champion mare and apart from stablemate Kermadec, there doesn't look to be any major threats.

Note: Punters will back Winx into even money by Saturday, so get in now for the best price available.

2016 Australian Derby betting

The 2016 Australian Derby field has been released with 13 runners entered. Jameka ($6 at Sportsbet.com.au) is the only filly in the field and there are three Kiwi runners, including the Stephen McKee and Edward Chippendale-trained What's The Story.

The Mick Price-trained Tarzino is the favourite after winning the Victorian Derby and the in its last two starts. Bookmakers have it listed at even money and it looks tough to beat.

Price said the three-year-old has worked well since its Rosehill Guineas win, galloping over 1600m on the Kensington track.

“I was very happy with him,” Price said.

“He's come on well since the Rosehill Guineas. Craig Newitt rode him in the gallop and he was happy with as well so it's all good for Saturday.”

Kiwi What's The Story finished second in the New Zealand Derby earlier this month and should once again relish the distance. It's currently a $15 chance and $3.80 for the place.

The John O'Shea-trained duo of Tally and Etymology have been specked in the market with the stronger choice Tally currently on the second line of betting at $6.

2016 Australian Derby field:

1. Tarzino – $2
2. – $11
3. Etymology – $13
4. Tally – $6
5. Sovereign Nation – $26
6. Torgensen – $13
7. Gold Ambition – $21
8. What's The Story – $15
9. Tavago – $81
10. Crosley Hotshot – $26
11. Oh So Splendido – $101
12. Alfden – $201
13. Jameka – $6

T.J. Smith Stakes betting and barrier draw

The barrier draw has been completed for the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick this Saturday. The feature sprint race for The Championships has attracted a cracking field led by Godolphin's Exopshere.

It also features one of the world's highest-rated sprinters Chautauqua and a host of other chances including English, Terravista and last start Group 1 William Reid Stakes winner which is now trained by Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.

WilliamHill.com.au

1. Chautauqua (11) – $3.20
2. Flamberge (8) – $21
3. Delectation (2) – $17
4. Terravista (7) – $15
5. Our Boy Malachi (6) – $21
6. Rebel Dane (15) – $34
7. Dothraki (5) – $34
8. Seamus (3) – $67
9. Shiraz (9) – $26
10. Fast ‘n' Rocking (13) – $67
11. Knoydart (12) – $67
12. Boss Lane (1) – $81
13. Fell Swoop (10) – $21
14. Exosphere (4) – $2.80
15. English (14) – $9

It looks a two-horse race on paper with Chautauqua and Exosphere, but that bubble has burst many times and punters can take . English is value at $9, but it will have to contend with another wide barrier draw. That won't help, but its place chances appear high.

Terravista should come for support at $15 and $4.20 for the place. It rarely runs a bad race and could find itself in the ideal spot from barrier seven.
