Glorious Goodwood Betting

Racing Online - Glorious Goodwood Betting

Glorious Goodwood 2020 is under threat due to the coronavirus pandemic. There is no racing in the UK at the time of writing, but there are ongoing discussions about staging meetings behind closed doors.

Glorious Goodwood, officially the Qatar Goodwood Festival, is a UK horse racing meeting held over five days in late July and early August in Sussex, England. The racing is staged on a quirky track, which means there are specialists who can handle the course while others struggle to produce their best form. Goodwood is a much more relaxed and easygoing affair than Royal Ascot, and many racegoers congregate on Trundle Hill to enjoy picnics and watch the racing for free.

Glorious Goodwood betting options

The Goodwood Festival features 18 handicaps, including some major races for ante-post betting. The Steward’s Cup is a six-furlong handicap that always attracts a big field of over 25 runners. When the weights come out there is plenty of ante-post betting activity. There are three Group 1 races during the Goodwood Festival which generate a great deal of betting interest. Online bookmakers run odds on the leading jockey and leading trainer titles, both of which are based on the number of winners and not prize money. There are also several special markets for the Goodwood Festival, such as the number of winning favourites and the total of winning margins by distance.

Glorious Goodwood Betting Promotions

The Goodwood Festival is a good opportunity for racing bookmakers to target new customers with generous sign-up offers. They also reward the loyalty of existing customers with a range of betting promotions related to Glorious Goodwood. The feature races do not attract the same betting interest as Royal Ascot or the five Flat Classics, but live TV coverage does increase wagering action. Popular Goodwood betting promotions include the following:

Non-Runner/No Bet

Bookmakers introduce the non-runner/no bet concession for the major Flat and jumps races a few weeks before race day. Glorious Goodwood begins in the last week of July, which means ante-post bets are subject to the NRNB rule from sometime in June. The concession applies for the three Group 1 races at Glorious Goodwood and some of the heritage handicaps. Some bookmakers extend the offer to all 35 races a few weeks before the Goodwood Festival.

Best Odds Guaranteed

Several major bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) for every race meeting in the UK and Ireland. As such, this offer will apply to all 35 races at Glorious Goodwood. If a bettor takes an early price or board price on a horse in a Goodwood Festival race and the starting price (SP) is different, bets are settled at the best odds. BOG usually applies from 9am on race day and there is a daily winnings limit for the concession.

Extra Places

The Steward’s Cup is a heritage handicap and the highlight of the Saturday race card at Glorious Goodwood. The race over six straight furlongs is one of the most competitive sprint handicaps of the season. There is always more than 16 runners, so the standard place terms are one-quarter the odds for four places. The race is shown live on free-to-view television and therefore attracts many bets. Some bookmakers offer extra places, in which case each-way bets are settled to fifth and sixth place.

Money Back If Second To SP Favourite

There are 13 Group races at Glorious Goodwood (three Group 1, five Group 2 and five Group 3). These races attract a great deal of betting interest and are shown live on terrestrial television. Favourites have a good record in Group races on the Flat. Some bookmakers give customers a full refund if the horse they back finishes second to the SP favourite in the Group races at the Goodwood Festival. The refund comes in the form of a free bet and there is a maximum stake.

Free Bet Bonus

Online bookies provide free bets as part of a welcome offer. These free bets can be linked to a no deposit bonus, match deposit bonus, or match bet bonus. New customers who register just before and during Glorious Goodwood can take advantage of this offer. Free bets expire after a certain number of days, which is usually somewhere between seven and 30. Customers who have met the qualifying criteria can use the free bets on races at Glorious Goodwood.

Glorious Goodwood betting apps

Punters all over the world can bet on Glorious Goodwood using mobile betting apps that can be downloaded to iOS and Android devices. While licensing restrictions mean native smartphone apps are not available in certain jurisdictions, most online bookies have dedicated mobile betting sites that are optimised for popular web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

Goodwood Racecourse facts and figures

The Goodwood Racecourse is situated on the fringes of Chichester in West Sussex, around 63 miles south-west of central London. The nearest cities are Portsmouth (21 miles), Brighton (33 miles) and Southampton (37 miles). Due to the remote location in the South Downs and the lack of public transport in the area, Goodwood is not within a day’s return travel of the Midlands and the North of England. So while the Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot attract racegoers from all around the country, the Glorious Goodwood crowd is mainly from the southern counties.

Goodwood is rare in that the course is not a circuit. The sprint course features a six-furlong straight and caters for races up to one mile. Events from around one mile and two furlongs up to two miles are run on a loop and join the straight at the top bend, while other races join the straight at a lower bend. There is no draw advantage, but it is better to race prominently. There is a long, straight run-in and the winning post is at the lowest point of the track. The highest point is on the loop, away from the stands.

History Of Glorious Goodwood

The first public race meeting at Goodwood took place in 1802. A private meeting was held the previous year at the behest of the Duke of Richmond, the owner of the property.

During the 19th century, the late-summer meeting came to be known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’ in the press. The meeting has taken place every year since its inception, except during the two World Wars of the 20th century.

The record one-day attendance is 55,000 in 1953, of which about one-third were situated on Trundle Hill. Today, about 100,000 people attend Glorious Goodwood over the five days. Alongside Royal Ascot and the York Ebor meeting, it is one of the main summer racing festivals on the Flat in Britain.
