The Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious long distance hurdle race in the sport. The race distance is three miles and the track is the New Course at Cheltenham. That is about one and three quarter circuits and there are there are 12 obstacles. It is usually the fourth race of day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival which in 2020 is Thursday January 20 and the race time is 3.30pm. The race is a test of stamina and the ability to find a turn of pace after the final hurdle. The winner of the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle in the previous year often becomes a leading contender for the Stayers’ Hurdle. The two races are run over the same course and distance.
The New Course is a galloping track and despite the distance the Stayers’ Hurdle is often run at a decent pace. There are front runners and other horses lie off the pace. The complexion of the race can often change after the final hurdle and on the uphill run to the line. Horses aged four and older are eligible. Horses carry 11-10 except four-year-olds (11-00) and mares receive an allowance of seven pounds. The total prize fund is £325,000 and the winner receives £182,878. At the time of writing 40 horses have been entered at the first declaration stage but the final field is usually about 10 runners. The race has a history of producing multiple winners.

The Stayers’ Hurdle was first run in 1912 and was a weight for age selling event. The race was called the Spa Hurdle until 1972 when it first had its current registered name. The race has had several title sponsors but at the time of writing there is no sponsor for the 2020 race. Between 2005 and 2015 the race was known as the Ladbrokes World Hurdle. The Stayers’ Hurdle now has a fixed date on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival. From 2002 to 2012 all but two of the winners won the race more than once but there have been no multiple winners over the last seven years.
Last Year
The 2019 Stayers’ Hurdle, which is part of the Cheltenham Festival produced one of the feel-good sports stories of the year. The owner of the winner, Paisley Park, is registered blind. Andrew Gemmell gets his pleasure from the audio experience but doesn’t seem to lose out because of lack of sight. Paisley Park was in the midfield but closed in on the lead approaching the final hurdle. The horse stayed on for pressure and drew away in the final 75 yards to score by two and three quarter lengths. The second favourite, Faugheen, was unable to go with the winner and finished third, six and three quarter lengths off the pace.

Laurina and Apples Jade get the seven pounds mares allowance but both will have to show improvement from their latest races this season. Champ is more likely to run in the RSA Chase than the Stayers’ Hurdle but the horse can be competitive if he is targeted at the hurdle and not a chase. Penhill won the race in 2018 but his form has dipped over this season and last. If The Cap Fits is off the pace based on ratings and form.
PAISLEY PARK is the selection and the tip to win his second Stayers’ Hurdles in two years. The horse has been the best long distance hurdler for over a year. He won the championship race for long-distance hurdlers at Cheltenham last season and is good enough to complete the double. City Island could make the payout places if producing his best form which includes a win at the Cheltenham Festival in 2019. However, PAISLY PARK ticks most boxes and can win another Stayers’ Hurdle.
Our Tip:
Our :Tip Paisley Park at 11/8 with Betfair.
