Renowned Matamata trainer Stephen Autridge has adopted a “quality over quantity” approach in his stable in recent years, and it’s proving successful.
Despite having just 15 horses in his stable, one-third of them are three-year-old fillies with their sights set on the Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton next month.
One of these promising fillies, Livid Sky, made a significant impression at Tauranga, solidifying her candidacy for the South Island trip.
Autridge expressed his confidence in her progress, stating, “She has come a long way in a hurry, but we have always liked her. I think that she is a horse that will continue to improve.”
Livid Sky has had the least racing experience among the fillies but is rapidly catching up and will face a challenging test in her next start at the Soliloquy Stakes (Group 2, 1400m).
Another stablemate, Midnight Monarch, who is also in contention for the 1000 Guineas, had a disappointing performance, prompting Autridge to conduct an inspection to determine her spring campaign’s direction.
Tears Of Victory and Loch Katrine, on the other hand, are set to continue their journey towards Riccarton at their home track on Saturday, with Autridge expressing optimism about their chances.
Regarding Still Bangon, the fifth hopeful for the 1000 Guineas, Autridge maintains hope for her chances.
“We are still a chance with Still Bangon.”
Despite facing some setbacks, he believes all of his fillies have solid prospects.
Amidst the anticipation surrounding his fillies, Autridge is also enthusiastic about Stylish Red’s prospects.
He plans to ride her quietly, as she tends to perform best when ridden in that manner, and believes she has a good chance to make an impact in upcoming races.
