Legarto with big spring aims ahead of Tarzino return

In anticipation of the Group 1 Trophy (1400m) at this Saturday, all eyes are on , who carries the mantle of the favourite.

Legarto, a daughter of , had a triumphant outing in her last race, securing victory in the Group 1 (1600m) and exhibiting promising form in her recent trials.

Trainers Ken and expressed their satisfaction with their mare’s condition leading up to her first-up assignment and seemed unfazed by the pressure that accompanies the favorite’s status.

commented, “We are very happy going into the race. Her work was very good on Tuesday morning, so all systems are go. There is still improvement in her.

“She is forward enough to go a good race, but it will certainly bring her on. It is not her grand final, but we are happy enough going into the race.”

Backing Legarto, punters can also find assurance in the fact that regular jockey has opted to ride her over the multiple Group One winner and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) champion, Sharp ‘N’ Smart.

Despite their confidence, Kelso remains cautious of Legarto’s competition, acknowledging, “It is a very good field. I think it is one of the best Tarzino Trophy’s that has been assembled for some time, with a fair bit of Australian form in it as well.

“The track looks like it is going to be perfect, so that is a big help.”

For this race, Legarto will sport the Hawke’s Bay Cancer Society silks, and if she emerges victorious, the TAB will donate $2,000 to the local charity.

Looking ahead, a return to Hastings later this month is in the cards for Legarto before she sets her sights on Australia, aiming to compete for the substantial prize money available.

Ken Kelso explained, “All going well, the plan is to go back for the (Group 1, 1600m), and (A$10 million, 1500m) is probably the main target of the spring in Sydney.”
