Balog Bags IRA’s Northern Nationals at Superior Speedway

by Justin Zoch
He’s been strong there in the past – including a runner-up to Terry McCarl in last year’s Northern Nationals at Superior Speedway in Superior, Wisconsin - but Bill Balog was not to be denied this year. Balog struggled a bit in his heat race and started ninth in the A-main but wasted little time working his way forward before passing Steve Meyer following a lap 16 caution flag. It was Balog’s sixth IRA win of the 2010 season.

McCarl Finally Captures IRA Northern Nationals

There are not too many tracks around the Upper Midwest where Terry McCarl had not visited victory lane but Superior Speedway in Superior, Wisconsin, was one of them. That all changed when McCarl raced by Erin Crocker to take the win at the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints Budweiser Northern Nationals. The win was the fourth IRA win of the season for McCarl.

Crocker took the lead from the outside of the front row and held off polesitter Davey Heskin through a few early yellow flags and a red flag for Billy Hafemann's flip in turn two. On the restart, McCarl snuck by Crocker and opened up a large lead. Late in the race, IRA point leader Bill Balog closed in on Crocker to take second but was never able to pass McCarl, despite a late yellow flag. Balog, who started 10th, was second followed by Crocker, Mike Reinke and Scott Neitzel. Johnny Herrera suffered a broken nose wing and slipped to sixth from third at the finish ahead of Davey Heskin, who spun while running second but charged back to seventh at the finish.

Superior Expands NASCAR Whelen All-American Series In Wisconsin

Butch and Linda Erickson spent the first week of February in Daytona Beach getting a first-hand look at what NASCAR has to offer its track promoters. The Ericksons, promoters of Superior (Wisc.) Speedway, took part in the activities and meetings during DIRECTV Speedweeks that NASCAR hosts. Beginning with its 2009 season, the .375-mile red clay oval located in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin near Lake Superior, will be part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. “The name ‘NASCAR’ brings a lot of excitement, but the NASCAR points fund and structure lead a long list of pluses,” said Butch Erickson.
