Spring Showdown Set for this Weekend at Deer Creek Speedway

SPRING VALLEY, MN: This weekend isn't only the biggest payday so far this season, but the largest single event payout in the history of "The Creek" for an event held in April. That's right race fans, over $40,000 will be up for grabs on Saturday night when some of the nation's best pull through the back gate for the Justice Brothers Car Care Products Spring Showdown on Saturday, April 28th.

It's Time for a Showdown!
The United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) will make their first stop at the speedway in 2012 with a $4,000-to-win, $400-to-start payout that is expected to draw some of the best modified teams in the country. The question is, will the "locals" let the big money leave town or will they defend their turf? Only time will tell.

Possibly a bigger question is who will take home the big check in the WISSOTA Late Model division? Twenty-four cars will line up and hit the high banks for the $2,000-to-win, $200-to-start feature event.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and USRA B-Mods will also be competing for their largest payout to date with each class paying $400-to-win, $70-to-start and one talented WISSOTA Street Stock driver will take home $300 with the field getting a minimum of $70 to start.

Waits Finds Deer Creek Speedway Fall Jamboree Winner Circle

Opening night of the 13th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree Thursday ended the same way it did the last time the United States Modified Touring Series tackled the Deer Creek Speedway: with Brad Waits in the winner’s circle.

Kinser Leads Entire Race to Pick Up 9th Win of 2011 at Deer Creek Speedway

by Kyle Luetters
One night after flipping violently at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, Steve Kinser was back in victory lane for the 9th time as he dominated the Outlaws annual visit to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. The driver of the #11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet started from the outside pole and grabbed the lead going down the back stretch. For the remainder of the 35 lap event, the entire field could only watch as Kinser ran away from the pack.

“Tonight our car felt absolutely great,” said Kinser, a Bloomington, Ind. native. “We had a tricky restart last night and I goofed on it. The track was really good tonight. It laid a little rubber on the high side of turn four so I had to move down a bit. We had an opportunity to gain some points on Jason (Meyers) and we ended up losing a few. From here on it, we’re going for wins and trying to close out this thing strong. Everything else will have to fall where it does but if we can continue to win races than there’s nothing more we can do.”

Starting alongside Kinser was his Tony Stewart Racing teammate, Donny Schatz. The driver of the #15 STP/Armor All/Chevrolet tried his best to catch his teammate but ended up battling the likes of Brad Sweet and Kerry Madsen for the second spot.

“Tonight was another good finish for our team,” said Schatz, a Fargo, N.D. resident. “Wished we could’ve won last night but that’s just how it goes. We had a great car tonight, we’ve been changing some things and getting better. We’re glad to be back in the Midwest and getting closer to the end of the season.”

Third position changed hands several times throughout the race with Madsen, Sweet and Craig Dollansky trading slide jobs through all four corners at the 3/8th’s mile oval. In the end, it was Madsen who snuck by Sweet to hold onto the last podium spot.

Waits wins World Modified Dirt Track Championship at Deer Creek Speedway

Nothing fancy. No sponsors. No decals. No flashy graphics. Just a guy who knows how to drive the wheels off a racecar ... and a guy who is $20,000 richer. His name is Brad Waits, but you can call him World Champion.

Just about a 20-minute drive from his residence in Rochester, Minn., Waits conquered one of the toughest, most talent-laden fields in dirt Modified history Saturday night as he raced to victory in the inaugural World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Hanson Tire Service.

Although his name may not be well known outside of his area code, fans – and especially his competitors – throughout the upper midwest are quite familiar with the quiet dirt track racing veteran who has dozens of victories on his résumé.

It was just last Friday, however, that Waits climbed back into the cockpit of a Modified for the first time in two years after a brief stint driving a dirt Late Model.

“I’ve got a bunch of people that always like watching me run the Modified stuff,” he said in victory lane. “Pieces fell into place in the right amount of time and we found this old car. It was (built) a year between the two best ones I had, and ended up getting it for a decent buy.

“I figured it would soften up enough for me to like it.”

Waits ran second to Gustin in Friday night’s “A” Main Qualifier, and started Saturday’s 50-lap championship race from the outside of the front row with Gustin on the pole and Dan Bohr in the middle of the three-wide lead group.

Gustin and Bohr got the jump at the start and dove into the first corner door to door while Waits slipped back a couple of car lengths and settled into third. Out of the fourth corner, Gustin and Bohr were still side by side as Gustin inched ahead to lead the first lap.

Gustin rebounds to win Friday’s feature, earns pole position for World Modified Dirt Track Championship finale Saturday

In the game of golf, Ryan Gustin’s performance at the Deer Creek Speedway on Thursday night would be the equivalent of a slice into the woods.

Timms tops night two of World Modified Dirt Track Championship at Deer Creek Speedway

by USMTS Media PR
Getting to the front in his heat race got Randy Timms the pole position for the main event and that’s where he stayed as he led all 35 laps of Thursday night’s “A” Main Qualifier on night #2 of the World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Hanson Tire Service at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
