The 12th Annual Chilton Fall Invitational returned to the Calumet County Fairgrounds in Chilton to gather 303 race competitors from around Wisconsin and beyond to the “Largest Race on the Smallest Track in the State.“ Friday night racing action showcased 34 heat races, a 360 Sprint A-Main and All-Star Features in the Late Model and IMCA Modified divisions. Major Sponsors of the weekend’s race included: Mueller’s Sales & Service of Random Lake, the 21 Gun Saloon of Denmark, Pennelopy’s Buffet of Chilton, Larry’s Distributing “Budweiser” of Sheboygan, Best Western- Staton Inn of Chilton and Wild Inc. of Waukesha. Trophies were sponsored by Bob Schneider. Other sponsors included Bernie’s Auto Service of Chilton, Wehrs Machine & Racing Products, Behling Racing Equipment, Jonnys Racing Parts, Five Star Race Bodies, W.C.M. Motorsports and O’Reilly Auto Parts.
In the 360 Sprint division, Scotty Thiel of Sheboygan jumped into the early lead in lap 3 with Plymouth’s Ben Schmidt flying into second two laps later. By lap six, Jeremy Schultz of Beaver Dam pulled behind Schmidt to pressure him for the second spot. As Schmidt and Schultz battled, Thiel charged around the Chilton track putting more room between his car and the competition. With Schmidt running the high side of the track, Schultz pulled down to the inside to chase down the leader. By the half way point in lap 13, Thiel helped secure his lead by putting a lapped car between his and Schmidt’s. Seven laps later, Schmidt broke free from Schultz, made up the distance on the track and passed the lapped car to pressure leader Thiel for the remaining seven laps. But after coming in second in his heat, Thiel would not give up the lead and charged through the checkered flag to win the first A-Main of the Chilton Fall Invitational. Heat winner Schmidt followed in second with Schultz, Tony Wondra of Kewaskum and Kyle Marten of Sheboygan Falls rounding out the top five.
