Traber, Bujak & Schumann Enduro Winners At Dells Raceway Park May 24

Wisconsin Dells, WI, May 24 – Darryl Traber of Waterford, collected his first Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series win of the season and first at the Dells Raceway Park. Traber initially finished in the runner up position to Jim Plautz. Plautz was later disqualified after post race inspection for too high of compression, voiding his great run. Plautz was four car lengths ahead of Traber at the finish of the “Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 250”.

Traber was the overall winner and first in the "A" Class over Don Lunsford. First in the "B" Class was Matt Arvia collecting his second consecutive win in the class over Bob Palermo.

Leo Bujak recorded his first Midwest Enduro Small Car Series win of the 2009 season during the running of the “Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 125” small car enduro. The win was the second career win for Bujak, the first was at the Rockford Speedway on May 6, 2007. The top four drivers of the event were disqualified after post race inspection. Initial winner Mark Sontag jr. had modified springs with Mark Johler, Greg DiMaggio and Mike Jucius too high in compression. Bujak was first over Kyle Rasmussen.

Joel Schumann collected his second consecutive win in the Midwest Enduro V-6 Series over Brad Bahr.

Rozie Moore and Erika DeYoung had quite a battle during the running of the 15-lap “powder puff” event for the Midwest Enduro Small Car & V-6 Series cars. Moore held the point for most of the event but DeYoung led the event from lap 9 to 13 but could not hold off Moore as she went by to take the win over DeYoung and Jamie Schumann.

SMALL CAR & V-6

Rasmussen, a Midwest Enduro Small Car Series 2009 rookie driver, got a great jump on the field as the green flag was displayed from starter Kevin Lucas. Corey Jankowski stayed with Rasmussen for the first three circuits of the 125-lap event but Rasmussen took off and held a one-second advantage over DiMaggio by lap ten. Sontag went by DiMaggio on lap 14 and soon disposed of Rasmussen at lap 17. Johler was even with Sontag by the lap 50 marker but then fell off the pace and by lap 100 was eight seconds behind the leader. Sontag dominated the remainder of the 125-lap event, nearly lapping the entire field as Johler crossed the line just in front of Sontag. The top five after the official finish were Bujak, Rasmussen, Matt Moore, Deyan Yordanov and Jason Jarvis.

STOCK CAR

The running of the "Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 250" Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series main event was set to go with 25 year veteran enduro driver Jim Plautz at the command from the pole position in his outstanding Richard Petty replica entry. Plautz bolted out in front quickly as this looked to be one of the fastest paced events of the year. Plautz held the point for the first 15 laps before Mike Hennessey took over. Plautz battled back and was back out front at lap 25. At the lap 25 marker, Plautz was followed closely by Hennessey, Al Kuphal, Ryan Nuti and Jay Bozart. Plautz had his rear view mirror full of Hennessey and Kuphal now as Nuti joined in the mix. The race complexion would change on lap 73 as many of the top contenders were quickly out of the event. A major pileup ensued in turn 1 after one of the entrants lost an engine on the raceway. Art Speciale was one of the victims as he backed his car in the wall followed by Mark Fogel, Tom Ruh, Mike Hart and a host of others. Hennessey, who held the top spot at this point, also went wide on the slickened surface. Kuphal took advantage of the situation and used the low groove of the 1/3 mile paved oval masterfully to his advantage as the first of two mandatory refueling pit stops took place on lap 83. The top five at the break were Kuphal, Plautz, Bozart, Nuti and Traber. The top five were the only cars on the lead lap at this point of the 250-lap contest.

After the break, the race was going to be challenging for Kuphal as he now had Plautz, Nuti and Bozart all over him. Plautz looked strong as he took command with Bozart in tow as Kuphal and Nuti began to fade. Kuphal went in to the pit area on lap 105 experiencing break problems on his Buddig/Old Wisconsin Sausage sponsored Monte Carlo. Bozart went ahead of Plautz on lap 120 and at lap 125 the running order was Bozart, Plautz, Nuti, Traber and Brian Blenker. The field was stopped on lap 142 for a major fire underneath the #67 Nuti entry. Nuti jumped out of the car to safety and was uninjured. As the field was stopped for the cleanup and safety efforts of the Dells Raceway Park, Mark Tomasi’s car also went up in a small fire. Tomasi was also uninjured. Plautz and Bozart swapped the lead several times for the next nineteen laps until Bozart went in to the pit area on lap 161 for mechanical problems, also at the point he was shown as the leader. When the field approached the final pit stop at lap 166, the top five were Plautz, Traber, Don Lunsford, Blenker and Gerry Galloway. Plautz and Traber were the only cars on the lead lap.

The final 83 circuits was going to be the battle between Plautz and Traber for the win. They were the only two cars on the lead lap. There also was a hotly contested battle for third as Lunsford, Blenker, Galloway and Tom Barnharst were all on the same lap, one lap behind the leaders. Plautz got the jump on Traber on the restart as Traber was blocked with slower traffic at the drop of the green. Plautz pulled out to a seven-second advantage over Traber by lap 200. Traber trimmed the lead to five seconds on lap 225 but was eight seconds behind by lap 230. With ten to go, Plautz advantage was only two seconds. Traber made a charge on the final laps but could not get any closer than four car lengths to Plautz. The official top five finish of the event was Traber, Lunsford, Hennessey, Blenker and Galloway.

The next Series event is set for Sunday June 28 at the Rockford Speedway (Loves Park, IL). The “MAC TOOLS 250” will be the main event for the Stock Car division with the Rockford Runner division competing at the same time on the historic ¼-mile paved oval. Preliminary events will begin at 12:30. For further information call (262) 895-6682 from 6 - 9 pm. or leave a message.
