Calvin Stueck in the 35Q and the 99 of Daryl Erickson head down the back stretch into turn threeBy: Randy Van Hoof
Tilleda Thunder On Ice week 6 found temperatures in the low 20s but with the overcast and blustery, snowy day it seemed a lot colder. In the end it was Greg Gutt picking up feature win number 5 of the season. Clint Forstner claiming hi second win. First time out this season, Daryl Erickson and a “Wiley” old veteran Ben Michonski picking up wins.
Tony Schwamer in the 06 and the 1 of Dan Michonski make a "Chucky Forstner" sandwichFWD Studded class was first to take to the frozen “Lake Speed” with the 35Q of Calvin Stueck leading the 99 of Daryl Erickson to the green. Due to a couple of scratches these were the only two drivers to make the call for the feature. Stueck jumped out to an early 3-4 car lead, but Erickson slowly reeled him in. By the midway point Erickson was putting the pressure on. The lead changed hand a few times in the next couple of laps and the two drivers raced hard for the lead. Stueck went into turn 3 a little hot and opened the door for Erickson to claw out a 2 car length victory. Erickson also won the heat race.
Three wide heading into turn one has the 07 of Mike Schmidt on the inside, the 10 of Ben Michonski in the middle and Craig Wildenberg on the outside in the 41Feature number two, the RWD Non-Studded Class had a full field of 16 cars. David Rindt in the 39 and Andrea Olson in the 07 will lead the all the hard chargers to the green flag. As per the rules the points leaders start in the rear of the features. The top three in points will have their work cut out for them today. Andrea Olson will take the lead on lap one and hold on for two circuits. Mel Westphal in the 11 will see the light at front of the field for a couple of laps as the points leader Dan Michonski in the 1 works his way into the top five. Clint “Chucky” Forstner in the 64, third in points is coming on strong as the 33 Of Nate Michonski, second in points is having some trouble getting past the 46 of Pete Forstner and gets a flat in the left rear and forced out of action. D. Michonski will get to the front on lap 10 and start to open up a small lead, but C. Forstner is getting through traffic and has his racer hooked up well and can see the rear of the 1 car taking the white flag. Going into turn one C. Forstner gets his nose inside Michonski and Dan is forced out of the preferred grove and gets caught behind the lapped traffic and Forstner is able to make a clean pass for the lead and takes his second feature win of the season.
Dusty Grall in the 6 and Jeff Jolitz in the 1 try to keep the points leader Greg Gutt in the 20 at bayRWD Studded feature today has three combatants taking the reins of their wild, fierce, clawed racing machines. Ben Michonski in the 10 modified was back today after running a couple weeks with his boys in the non-studded class, leads 41 of Craig Wildenberg and Mike Schmidt in the 07 to the green. Wildenberg jumps out to the lead from his outside starting position and holds off Michonski for the first three laps. It seems that the 07 of Schmidt might be down a little bit on power today and is running third. At the front it is getting to be a battle between Wildenberg and Michonski as Ben gets the inside line on lap five and the two run sided by side for 3 laps. Michonski finally gets by for the lead and holds on for the final 6 laps to take his first feature win in the RWD studded class, followed by Wildenberg and Schmidt.
FWD Studded feature winner Daryl EricksonFinal green of the day falls on the FWD non-studded field with the 35Q of Calvin Stueck and the 6 of Dusty Grall on the front row. Stueck leads the first 4 laps as the hard charging Jeff Jolitz in the 1 and the 20 of Greg Gutt battle through the 6 car field. Jolitz gets to the front on lap five with Gutt in hot pursuit. But on lap seven Gutt makes his move in turns 3 & 4 and gets past Jolitz for the lead and holds on for the final eight laps to take his fifth win of the season.
