Traber, Bayer & Nelson Enduro Winners At Wilmot Raceway July 18

Wilmot, WI, July 18 – Darryl Traber of Waterford, collected his second Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series win of the season during the running of the ’95 WIIL ROCK 200” enduro held at the Wilmot Raceway. Traber took the lead with 10 laps to go after Charlie Pinkalla fell victim to a flat tire.

Traber was the overall winner and first in the "A" Class over Mike Watson. First in the "B" Class was Jesse Jollie collecting his first win in the class over Ken Childre.

Steve Bayer recorded his second Midwest Enduro Small Car Series win of the 2009 season during the running of the “95 WIIL ROCK 100” small car enduro. Bayer was first over local favorite Todd Booker.

Brad Nelson collected his second win of the season in the Midwest Enduro V-6 Series over Julie Hayes.

Pre-race activities included a tribute to Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series legendary driver Steve Just. Just lost his life earlier in the week in an unexplained mystery that has yet to be solved. Charlie Pinkalla drove a replica car that he and his family put together in days to honor their friend and fellow competitor. All drivers and crews stood across the track to honor Just as Pinkalla and fellow friend and competitior Bob Kelly completed a lap around the track. Memorial services are set for Thursday July 23 at Krause Funeral Home in Milwaukee. 12401 West National Avenue.

SMALL CAR & V-6

Nelson, a Midwest Enduro V-6 Series 2009 race winner, posted an early lead on the field as the green flag was displayed from starter Kevin Lucas for the running of the “95 WIIL ROCK 100”. Nelson soon had Leo Bujak and Mike McKay on his back bumper. Bujak had the upper hand by lap four but had Booker working him over. Bujak separated himself from Booker by lap 18 but the real battle was for second as Bayer slipped by on lap 25. The top five at the 25 lap marker were Bujak, Bayer, Booker, Jason Jarvis and McKay. The red flag came out on lap 49 for a loose tire. Bayer was all over Bujak at this point with Booker a distant third. 2008 Midwest Enduro Small Car Series champion Mark Johler was on the move as he started to close on Booker and moved in to third place with 25 to go. The top five at lap seventy five were Bujak, Bayer, Johler, Booker and Eddie Wolf. Bayer got by Bujak at lap 82 with Johler and Booker only three seconds behind the leader. Bujak retained the lead on lap 86 as Johler ‘s day was through a few circuits later on lap 88 with mechanical problems. Bujak pulled in to the pit area on lap 90 with a flat as he was leading the event. Bayer looked like he was in command of the 100 lap event at this point but Booker had different ideas as he began to run Bayer down with ten to go. Booker was on Bayers rear bumper with one to go but as he made one last effort coming in to turn three his front suspension broke, ruining his efforts. The top five at the finish were Bayer, Booker, Lewis Frazer, Mike Jucius and Dylan Helfenstein.

STOCK CAR

The running of the "95 WIIL ROCK 200" Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series main event was set to go with rookie driver Matt Arvia in command as the field went green. Arvia set a steady pace on the 1/3 mile clay oval as it dusted up down the straights and rut up in the corners making quite an adventure for the stock type cars. The first of many red flags for the day flew on lap 18 for the tire departure off of the Gerald Hayes entry. At the lap 25 marker, Arvia was followed closely by current point leader Mike Watson, Michael Hennessy, Charlie Pinkalla and Don Lunsford. Arvia was the next victim of the track as he too broke on lap 37, breaking an apparent axle. Watson was now out front with Hennessy in second. The green flag was not displayed for long as the axle on the Jay Bozart entry broke at the lap 41 marker. Pinkalla got by Hennessy at lap 43 for the runner up position and started to close the gap for the lead in his Steve Just replica entry. The next red flag flew on lap 57 for a multi-car incident involving Hennessy, Les Wiedenhoeft and Gerry Galloway. All three cars sustained heavy damage with Hennessy getting the worst when he rolled over on to his roof. None of the drivers were injured but their day was done. As the field rolled to the first of two mandatory refueling pit stops on lap 66, the top five were Watson, Pinkalla, Lunsford, Traber and Matt Born.

Born made a great pit stop and came back out as the leader of the event. Watson put Born to the test and got by at the lap 76 marker to take the lead. Pinkalla started to make his move and went by Watson at lap 88. The field slowed at lap 97 to remove some debri off of the raceway. In the process of counting laps under yellow, a lap was missed on Watson’s scorecard putting him one lap behind the leader Pinkalla. At the half way point at lap 100, the running order was Pinkalla, Mark Fogel, Traber, Born and Watson. Only four more laps went by before the red flag was displayed for defending Series champion Tom Barnharst who broke an axle. Fogel, despite losing a lap earlier in the event, unlapped himself from the leader and was on a mission to charge to the front. At lap 124, the field slowed to another red flag for Born as he also broke a right rear axle. At this point, Fogel was only nine seconds behind leader Pinkalla. When the field approached the final pit stop at lap 136, the top five were Pinkalla, Fogel,Traber, Watson and Tony Paskiewicz. Pinkalla, Fogel and Traber were the only cars on the lead lap.

The final 64 circuits was going to be the battle of attrition as the track was fast but rough in the turns. The race looked to be a contest between Pinkalla and Fogel as Traber fell back some struggling with a broken sway bar for most of the 200 lap event. Fogel slipped by Pinkalla at lap 149 for the lead but was short lived as he went to the pit area on lap 157 to change a flat tire. The red came out once again at lap 171 for the tire departure off of Jay LeBrun’s car. Traber was three seconds behind Pinkalla at this point. The red flag flew for the final time at lap 180 for a fire under the Erich Iversen entry. Pinkalla looked like he was headed for victory lane as he maintained a six second lead over Traber up to lap 194 when he got together with Lunsford, flattening his right front tire. Traber went by one lap later and went on for the win despite breaking a tie rod on the final circuit of the event. The official top five finish of the event was Traber, Watson, Pinkalla, Fogel and Jollie.

The next Series event is set for Sunday September 6 at the Dells Raceway Park (Wisconsin Dells). The “LABOR DAY 250” presented by Alakai Hotel & Suites will be the main event for the Stock Car division. Preliminary events will begin at 12:00.
