LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. -- The Havasu 95 Speedway will be treating their fans to some hot ASA sanctioned racing this Saturday, February 21st, and at the same time will be celebrating Dairy Days. The most scenic quarter mile paved oval in the southwest, located in beautiful Lake Havasu City-Arizona, will treat their fans to action from the Colorado River Late Model Series, the ASA Street Stocks, Bandoleros and the Powder Puff Factory Stocks.
The Colorado River Late Model Series is co hosted by the Havasu 95 Speedway and the Lucas Oil I 10 Speedway, located in Blythe-California, and features some of the best Late Model driving talent in the southwest. The series will be presenting race number seven, of 12, this Saturday night. Going into this race it appears that a way too close to call points race has developed between drivers "Awesome" Austin Murphy and Mark Schriner. Murphy leads the standings with 384 points based on a feature win and six top five finishes. Schriner has two feature wins and six top fives and will be looking to eradicate the six point deficit between himself and Murphy. Also of interest here is a tight race between the drivers who are third through fifth in the standings. There are only 8 points separating drivers Rob Munoz and Broc Murphy who are in third and fourth while Mike Sutterfield is only 18 points out of third.
The ASA Street Stocks are seven races into the Havasu 95 Speedway's 2008-2009 winter racing series and it's all about one driver: Ralph Adams. The 68 year old, or "34 times two" as he likes to call it, has been formidable. So far he's won five features, including the last three in a row, and has backed those stats with six top fives and one top ten finish. That level of consistency has placed him in excellent shape to win the track championship. The only driver close to him in the points standings is Nathan Hovdal who is 66 points away from Adams.
The Havasu 95 Speedway has a long standing policy of developing the future driving stars of tomorrow through their Bandolero racing program. They are justifiably proud of the fact that they have one of the best Bandolero programs in the southwest with an extremely healthy car count. Strongly supporting this effort are locally based business organizations such as JJ&B Racing and Bando Stuff.
Heading into their fourth race of the season this Saturday night the Bandoleros are also involved in a very tight championship race with only 20 points between the top four drivers. Alex Morgan sits on top of the standings with 142 points based on a feature win and three top five finishes. But he only holds a mere two point lead over Tommy Kelley who matches the leader's stats with a feature win and three top fives. Also a major player in this championship run is Kyle Niquette whose three top five finishes has him just six points away from the top. Not to be overlooked here is the presence of Breanna Nelson who is only 20 points away from the top of the standings and still a major factor.
The always fun Factory Stocks will see action but this Saturday is reserved for the ladies. The Powder Puff Factory Stocks will be making their third appearance of the season in hopes of accumulating points for their own special championship series. But any Havasu 95 Speedway Factory Stock fan can tell you that these ladies also race with the regular division on any given Saturday night. Drivers like Lisa Snell, Angie Dietch and Sandy Nagel have often proven that they can hold their own with the guys anytime and anywhere.
The Havasu 95 Speedway's special events department has also pulled out all of the stops to entertain their fans this Saturday. It's their annual Dairy Days at the speedway and that means that fans will be invited to participate in an old fashioned ice cream eating contest. In the tradition of Minnesota like fun, there will also be a snow shovelling contest.
The Havasu 95 Speedway weekend kicks off on Friday night with a test and tune session for the teams from 6 to 9 pm. This session is free to spectators and concession stands will be available. On Saturday race day the spectator gates will open at 4 pm with the racing getting underway at 6 pm. General tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors 55 plus, the military and the handicapped. Children's tickets are $6 for age six to 16 while kids five and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The speedway also offers a family package which admits two adults and two kids age six to 16.
For out of town race teams and fans the Days Inn-Lake Havasu City is the official speedway motel. They offer beautiful and spacious rooms at very affordable rates. For information and reservations call 928 855 7841.
