Fogel First At Milwaukee Mile "Bema Polytech 150" Enduro Season Opener

West Allis, WI, May 2 – Mark Fogel of West Bend, recorded his first win of the season during Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series season opener held at the historic Milwaukee Mile oval. Fogel ran in the top five for most of the 150-lap contest and despite finishing in the runner-up position at the line he was declared the winner after Brad Hetzel was disqualified during post race inspection. The "Bema Polytech / Klement’s Sausage 150" enduro started 64 entrants including the full size "stock car" division, the 4-cylinder "small car" division and the “V-6” division. All divisions competed at the same time.

Fogel was first overall followed by Tom Barnharst and Don Lunsford. All three reached the Milwaukee Mile podium and earned huge trophies for their efforts plus prize money. Steve Bayer recorded his first ever enduro win in the "small car" class followed by Mike Jucius. First in the “stock car” division was Fogel. Fogel was also first in the “A” class division over Barnharst. In the “B” class, it was Matt Arvia over Gary Paulick. Another first time winner in the V-6 division was Joel Schumann. All trophy awards were courtesy of Bema Polytech Inc. of Elmhurst, IL

The top five in each class received plaque awards plus prize money. The awards were courtesy of the Klement's Sausage Co. of Milwaukee and Paulie's Pub of West Allis.

Members of the "Losers Car Club" were on hand to show off their vehicles prior to the main event.

The 150 lap main event started with Todd Welsing setting the early pace with Jasper Drengler in tow. Drengler was shown as the leader after one lap around the one-mile oval. Rookie driver Lee Whiting and Bob Palermo made contact in turn three making the entire field scramble. Whiting continued with Palermo bowing out of the event by lap ten. Mark Tomasi was on the move as he was shown as the new leader by lap four. Jared Pinkalla caught Tomasi one lap later and held a two-second advantage by lap ten. The field was slowed for the first time on lap 29 to remove the cars of Michael Dombrowicki and Solomon Barker as the two made heavy contact in turn two. As the field closed together for the yellow flag situation, Jay Bozart moved ahead with Pinkalla and Fogel right on his back bumper. The event was slowed at lap 38 for a mandatory refueling pit stop, the first of three for the day. The top five at this point were Bozart, Pinkalla, Fogel, Barnharst and Tomasi.

After the break in the action, Bozart and Fogel were once again the class of the field. Fogel and Bozart seemed to be drafting their way through the field as they were bumper to bumper for the next 25 circuits. Hetzel was starting to make his move as he closed the gap to two seconds behind race leader Bozart as the field entered the pit area on lap 75 for the second refueling stop of the day. The running order now had Bozart out front followed by Hetzel, Fogel, Barnharst and Don Lunsford.

Bozart once again jumped out front after the break with Fogel chasing him down. Hetzel had other ideas to separate the two as he took command of the event at the 80-lap marker. Hetzel held a three-second cushion over Fogel and Bozart as the event reached the 100-lap point. Fogel and Bozart narrowed the lead to two seconds just as the field was slowed for the final pit stop at lap 112. The top five going in to the final segment of the 150-lap event were Hetzel, Fogel, Bozart, Lunsford and Pinkalla.

Fogel stepped up to the plate for the final segment of the event knowing now that Hetzel had an apparent horsepower advantage. The field was slowed shortly after the stop on lap 114 for a huge melee in turn one sending numerous cars in to the outside retaining wall. Pete Koenig suffered the most damage as he and Tim Goulet got tangled up to start the five or six car wreck. As Bozart started to fade, the battle increased between Fogel and Hetzel for the top spot. Hetzel had the advantage but Fogel held the point briefly at lap 128 as the two worked lapped traffic. The final yellow came out on lap 134 for a collision involving the 2008 “small car “ series champion Mark Johler. Johler continued was shown five laps off the pace. With only fifteen laps remaining, Fogel tried and tried again to get past Hetzel without success. The effort still paid off as he held the second position when he crossed the finish line. Hetzel and Bozart were disqualified during post race inspection due to oversize cams. The top five at the finish were Fogel, Barnharst, Lunsford, Tomasi and Bayer.

The next Series event is scheduled for Sunday afternoon May 24 at the Dells Raceway Park (Wisconsin Dells) for the running of the “Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 250” enduro.
